چکیده

New findings reveal that, in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos, the centrosome provides signals that induce cell polarization, independently of its function as the microtubule-organizing center.

Centrosomes Can Initiate a Polarity Axis from Any Position within One-Cell C. elegans Embryos

The stereotyped asymmetry of one-cell C. elegans embryos has proven to be an important model for identifying molecular determinants of cell polarity. How polarity is initiated is less well understood. Polarity establishment depends on centrosomes, which use two molecularly distinct pathways to break symmetry. In both, the centrosome's position adjacent to the cell cortex is thought to determine...

E-Cadherin Is Required for Centrosome and Spindle Orientation in Drosophila Male Germline Stem Cells

Many adult stem cells reside in a special microenvironment known as the niche, where they receive essential signals that specify stem cell identity. Cell-cell adhesion mediated by cadherin and integrin plays a crucial role in maintaining stem cells within the niche. In Drosophila melanogaster, male germline stem cells (GSCs) are attached to niche component cells (i.e., the hub) via adherens jun...

Acto-myosin reorganization and PAR polarity in C. elegans.

The symmetry-breaking event during polarization of C. elegans embryos is an asymmetric rearrangement of the acto-myosin network, which dictates cell polarity through the differential recruitment of PAR proteins. The sperm-supplied centrosomes are required to initiate this cortical reorganization. Several questions about this event remain unanswered: how is the acto-myosin network regulated duri...

A Par-1-Par-3-Centrosome Cell Polarity Pathway and Its Tuning for Isotropic Cell Adhesion

To form regulated barriers between body compartments, epithelial cells polarize into apical and basolateral domains and assemble adherens junctions (AJs). Despite close links with polarity networks that generate single polarized domains, AJs distribute isotropically around the cell circumference for adhesion with all neighboring cells [1-3]. How AJs avoid the influence of polarity networks to m...

Cell polarity triggered by cell-cell adhesion via E-cadherin.

Cell polarity is orchestrated by numerous extracellular cues, and guides events such as chemotaxis, mitosis and wound healing. In scrape-wound assays of cell monolayers, wound-edge cells orient their centrosomes towards the wound, a process that appears to depend on the formation of new cell-extracellular-matrix adhesions as cells spread into the wound. In direct contrast to scrape-wounded cell...
